Light in August

Despite the long length of the audio book, the symbolism in this wonderful literary work is stated as "phenomenal" making this a truly great book to listen to. This audio book seems easier to listen to and follow compared to William Faulkner other works. It has a simpler traditional structure, relying less on technical innovations that are so familiar in the earlier books. The many storylines in Light in August will rip at the heart almost without hesitation.
In 1932, during one of the most productive times for many American authors, William Faulkner wrote his most emotional novel. The focus within this audio book is on subject matter that still remains controversial many years later.
"Light in August is a searing novel that meditates on racial hatred in the South and the moral depravity caused by Calvinist obsessions. The elusive time-shifting of The Sound and the Fury gives way here to a simpler version of the same technique, with the author flagging all shifts."

Human race is of importance in this novel than it is found in any other of Faulkner’s books. You see, Faulkner goes where Mark Twain, another amazing writer could not. Faulkner stares race right in its face and reaches a conclusion where Twain looked then had to look away. But Faulkner does not give a solution any more than Twain, but he does suggest an explanation saying that what matters is belonging.
At times, Light in August is known as "ironic Gospel", this is due to many innuendos to the birth of Jesus with the character of Joe Christmas. No matter how much controversy this book has created, it is still recognized as one of Faulkner's masterpieces.
Light in August centers around the drama of two main characters:
- Lena Grove - who is unwed and pregnant in search of the father of her child
- Joe Christmas - a man so tormented by the question of his mixed-race parentage that his own demons affect the entire town
As the characters struggle with their individual troubled relationships, they will be forced to confront their own mortality and find their source of hope.
Here is what some listeners have already said...
Light in August is compelling and interesting, one of William Faulkner's best works. Easier to follow along than the other titles he created and is great on audio book format.

A great audio book to start out with if you are just getting started with listening to Faulkner's books. This one introduces you to his unique style without getting to deep into it. Make this your first William Faulkner audio book.

I was afraid to listen to Light in August because the authors books can be complex and hard to follow, it is just his style. But this audio book is quite the opposite, I really enjoyed it from start to finish.

This story is very well done with enough story to keep your interest as this audiobook is longer in length. Another superb classic from one of the most unique writers from the past. Michelle P.
