Oprah Winfrey, the daytime talk-show host announced that Poitier's "-The Measure of a Man" has been chosen as her 56th book club title addition.

In Sidney Poitiers "The Measure of a Man", originally published in 2000, considered a "spiritual autobiography" by one of Hollywood's most respected and accomplished actors. Sidney Poitier, a personal hero of Oprah Winfrey is a very dignified person that he writes really candidly and passionately which is seen in this memoir. The Oscar winner takes his memories - from his childhood in the Caribbean to his turns in plays and films - with spiritual musings about topics like religion, racism and world leaders such as Nelson Mandela.

"Overwhelmed far beyond the point where words, alone, could fully express either my appreciation or my gratitude. Meanwhile, I proudly accept this honour on behalf of the forces that brought it about: the love of my parents, the ever-present kindness of strangers, and the hidden mysteries of the universe and, of course, Oprah Winfrey"
-Sindey Poitier

"Poitier, writes really candidly and passionately about his childhood, his family, relationships and his extraordinary career," Oprah Winfrey said about the book on her show.

Oprah also said:
"It's a beautifully crafted book, written like poetry. Because just as he speaks so eloquently, he also writes that way, too."

A talking audiobook edition of the book - narrated by Poitier himself was released in conjunction with the original hardcover won a Grammy Award for best spoken word audio book album in 2001. This memoir also became the Audio Publishers Association 2001 Award Winner, in the category of Nonfiction, Unabridged edition.

Here is Poitier's own introspective look at what has informed his performances and his life. Poitier explores the nature of sacrifice and commitment, price and humility, rage and forgiveness, and paying the price for artistic integrity. What emerges is a picture of a man in the face of limits - his own and the world's.
A triumph of the spirit, The Measure of a Man captures the essential Poitier.

Poitier wrote a previous memoir, "This Life" released in 1980.

Winfrey's decision to add Sidney Poitiers "-The Measure of a Man" to her book club has catapulted this title back onto bestseller lists.
