Oprahs book club brings forth yet again another incredible novel for us to all enjoy. The Road actually imbeds itself into your mind from the first sentence spoken unto weeks after you’ve finished listening to this amazing audible audiobook. Cormac McCarthy shows us the utmost strength of a father’s love for his son which is realized even in the worst of situations. A man and his son walk toward the coast while searching for food, shelter, and some sign of life. Their ecounters of other humans are devastating realizations of deep cruelty, utmost savagery, or hopeless despair. Moments of warmth and luck are noticed by the father, even during these times of total despair while struggling for his son. The grip of death is live and real, the father and son's luck reigns before death can grab a hold. The Road not only faces horror head on, but also sees the utmost love while in the most weary circumstances. Few authors could create this setting The Road encompasses, a journey of survival that will be remembered for times to come that Cormac McCarthy only could envision. The father and son are living a nightmare that not only surrounds them, but follows them every step of their horrific journey. They both are increasingly frightened when they sleep by others lurking around. At times, there seems to be no hope as they are starving but in needs of always being cautiously alert. With all their possessions found within a grocery cart containing some blankets and a gun with only two bullets. The gun will either provide them limited protection against humanity and the cannibalistic actions following their tracks or for the father to realize the ultimate decision to finish their lives before darkness and despair consumes them. As they walk to the coast in search of hope and life, the father tells his son that it is better to start having nightmares because when the dreams overcome them you know the end is near. Cormac McCarthy brings the listener within this novel by allowing them to dream for the father and son. The man is determined to protect his son from the savages of this doomed world, and he will stop at nothing to make sure him and his son reach their destination. They are on The Road that will either lead to their realization of hope and salvation, or their total despair and destruction. And you the listener are with them side by side travelling down The Road! The Road is an astonishing yet brutal work or art!
Here is what some listeners have already said... The Road is the best work from Mccarthy in my mind. With the impact of the novel greatly depending on the listener and where they are at in their life. One of the BEST novels I have ever listened to.
I could not stop listening to The Road. The mental images are realistically chilling, bringing a hauting feeling yet offering a hope right to the end. I still vividly remember details about the journey today, even though I listened to this book a while ago. Not many other stories enter my mind that have captured the true horror and also showing the amazing beauty of humanity so effectively.
The Road is a masterpiece displaying humankind at its worst and best. This story of love, horror and instinct is possibly one of the best books you may ever hear.
Being a father I could easily put myself in the fathers shoes. Walking a road to nowhere, with nothing to live for but the love of his son. Anyone who listens to this audiobook easily can substitute a loved one in the role of the boy and get the same emotional values and fulfillment from listening to Mccarthy's incredible journey.
